Believe it or not, I believe it stood for Emergency Medical Service. He really was great for not letting the facts get in the way of a good story, wasn't he! In fact... the more I think about it.... Blessings, LJ Actually, that is what a lot of us thought, except that he insisted on being ESM, and not EMS.

Actually, that is what a lot of us thought, except that he insisted on being ESM, and not EMS. Erg. Now I have to fire up some brain cells in the memory region I haven't had to access for a while... I have this vague picture in my head of David telling us he was an EMS Tech, someone asking why the letters in his screen name were 'out of order' and him (surprise, surprise) ignoring the question. He may have clarified at some point which I missed, but I always thought this was just another indication of his neurosis --clinging to his assertions despite the evidence to the contrary (even despite general common sense...). Do you have a better recollection? You're younger so I'm sure your memory is much better than my tired ol' synapses. Who else here remembers our good friend? Blessings, LJ

i don't believe his name has anything to do with medical stuff. Remember he believed that diseases didn't exist. Doctors were tricking people for the money. I believe he said it was deodorant that causes cancer? It locks in the waste or something...

I can't remember exactly, but ESM was an acronym for some kind of "mind over matter/physician heal thyself" mumbo-jumbo. Yes, definitely a nut job. No matter how often or how much someone proved him wrong he would continue arguing until finailly he would say "I'm leaving!" Before long he would be back, spouting the same garbage just from a different perspective. Hmm....

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

Sometimes even nut-cases have something useful to share with us.
And sometimes it's a good idea to leave quietly. The door can be left open for the prodigal one.......

Wow, I am missing a pretty good discussion.
First of all, I am sorry that I am so late to this discussion; and I apologize if I am intruding.
In reference to the first several posts, I have a 165 IQ, scored a 32 on the ACT, and I voted for John Kerry. But, that is in the past. I am not going to be like some of my Democratic counterparts and dwell on 2004. We have four more years of Bush, and that is that. Besides, there is good news. It seems the Republicans are as divided on issues as the rest of the country is, so who has a majority after all?
In economics and politics, I must say that I tend to agree more with AlphaOmega on many things; although I must say not all. I do believe capitalism is self-defeating. It is based on self-interest, which to me is the same as selfishness. Capitalism is not compatible with Christianity, which is why I believe the "Americanized Christianity" that we have in this country has so many problems within it. For one thing, instead of love one another as I have loved you, it teaches to love one another as long as you can profit from it in some way.
I disagree with AlphaOmega in that, he/she states that capitalism will eventually destroy greed/self-interest. I am sorry, but being that these are natural parts of our human sinful nature, these things will always exist in some form. However, I agree with him/her that the reason that capitalism has survived is because it is fueled by these human traits.
There has never been a truly Socialistic society. Socialism can only function in a democratic environment. The state controls the means of distribution and production, the people control the state, etc. In this way, consumers have a say in their society, and the state is held accountable.
I live in Texas. My wife works for Famiily Protective Services. In Texas, a very strong Republican state, people are more concerned with all the roads being built than the children that are dying. Over 500 children died in 2004 after being placed back into their original homes with previous investigations. Caseworkers have an average of 70 cases each. Each of these 70 cases could have between 2-4 children each, in which each caseworker has to determine if their lives are in danger. Foster homes can only hold so many children. In neighboring Arkansas, Protective Services have only 25-30 cases per caseworker, and a much higher efficiency rate among lives saved; although it would be ridiculous to assume we could save every child.
My wife is the epidemy of being over-worked and underpaid. Although she has been instrumental in removing some children from some pretty disgusting and terrifying situations, she is waiting for the phone call that some child that she reunited with their parents is dead; because she could not focus enough of her time to see hints of foul play.
...and this is all because people of Texas want the cheapest and least government possible. They keep their money to themselves, while the state does not have the funds to protect its children; and children are dying.
Arch.

That's one of the concepts I am starting to disagree with - that self-interest = wrong
