i guess i look to my grandparents and friends that are immigrants and such. they came here looking for a better life. they came here for the American way of life. yes that meant leaving their past behind. i have no problem with religious freedoms or cultural differences however... i have issue with those that are trying to make America another country. Many come here to just take and take from the generousity of real americans and have no intention of becoming americans. Those are the ones I wish would just stay where they came from or go back and leave us alone.
We didn't establish this country and keep it free so we can be taken advantage of by those who wish to destroy our way of life.

gene, i wish you could meet a guy i work with. he and his wife immigrated here about 7-10 years ago now. it was his dream to become an American. he works his butt off for his family and has actually taught me about my own country. he loves the "old country" but America is now his home. his words - i did not come to america to bring what i was with me, i came to america to become what i knew i could be. he gave up his education, degrees - all that - just to be American. he & his wife are great people and American's.

You describe what an american should be, and what the goal of imigrants should be seeking IMO. This country wasn't formed so we could have little Germany's, Italy's, Iraq's, Africa's and whatever you wish to add to this list. This is a land of opportunity to succeed, not to shape into other little countries.

Ahh - but them bringing their culture to share makes this country a better place. I love the little areas of town - here in Columbus we have German Village, in Cleveland, the best Little Italy. Its great to see people not abandoning their traditions - and that our country will accept them as they come.
And given my experience with immigrants and the like, I have met just as many hard working ones as lazy ones. The very same can be said for 'real' Americans.
And how many true citizens do we have on welfare, taking government grants, assisted living, etc.?

The give away programs should be stopped for all except those that have a genuine need such as those too old to care for themselves or the blind, crippled, etc. I don't have a problem taking care of those who can't care for themselves, but to hell with those who use taxpayer money to support laziness or drug habits. I wouldn't be surprized to see Illegals stop coming here if there were no "programs" that encourage immigration by those who are looking for a free ride. This is not what america is about.
There will never be an end to free programs because this is a vote buying scheme for the Democrat/communists.

Though I disagree with you generalizing all imigrants like that, I do agree that this is not what America is about. America wasn't founded to take tax payer money and give it to others.

How did you come to the conclusion that I meant all imigrants? My post applies to those who fit what I wrote.

(good commentary on a Libertarian site)The Padilla Doctrine Doesn't Infringe on Freedom -- It Destroys It by Jacob G. Hornberger Future of Freedom Foundation www.fff.org/comment/com0406c.aspCritics of the federal government’s two-year incarceration of accused terrorist Jose Padilla without charges or trial correctly point out that the government has violated Padilla’s right to counsel and his rights to due process of law, habeas corpus, and jury trial, all of which are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
But let’s be clear about the real significance of the Padilla case: the Padilla doctrine does not constitute just another governmental infringement of constitutional rights. Instead, it constitutes the destruction of freedom in America.

So they finally allow the "detainees" to hear the charges against them - to have their day in court! Gotta love the 3-tier government system.
He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.-- Thomas Paine, "Common Sense" [1776]
