In the news from south Florida i have heard that people are saying they have no food or water and are upset that FEMA is not bringing them product. I am not starting this thread to debate FEMA, but rather, to what extent we are to care for ourselves. There are differences when people are cared for by the gov't prior, that is not the issue. this is also not about those whos homes are completely wiped out.
my question is - when are we held accountable to protect ourselves?
Last year i was without power for 5 days due to the hurricanes. Yes it was "interesting" no it was not my favorite time, however, we made the best of it and did not scream and holler that the gov't was responsible. We in florida are told well in advance of storms to stock up on water and food for 3-5 days. i had enough, even buying a case of MRE's. i'm not wealthy, but i watch sales and expiration dates -- it's not expensive compared to what the reality would be - no food or water. I also save my gallon water containers to fill. On the news last evening there was a woman complaining that she didn't like the hot meal that was brought to her - in her home, free of charge. her home was nice and in one piece. no she didn't have electricity but she also said she didn't have food. Even without my hurricane supplies, i always have canned food in the house. sure it's not steak and ice cream, but it's food.
am i just too cynical? if you were to loose power today and be stuck in your own home for 3 days - would you starve? would you look a gift meal in the mouth and say - is that the best you can do?
sorry for ranting just don't understand people today.
