I get a little annoyed at how we (including me) sometimes approach the Bible. The New Testament consists of the Gospels or memoirs of the ministry of Jesus, letters, an account of the early church (Acts) and Apocalypse. It is statement of the Church in the 1st century that gives us a great deal of instruction and inspiration. Yet we seem to want to treat it as a code of law and argue over where to place emphasis.
The Old Testament has an even greater diversity of literary styles and imagery and still there is an inclination to take it as pure history and law.
What we need to do is to internalize it as a whole so that it informs the way we live our lives, not as a law book but as an inspiration. Inspired by God no longer means law chiseled in stone, rather, it means Living Word written in the heart.
